I’ve spent the last two days sicker than I think I’ve ever been… seriously, it was brutal.
So today when I finally got back to working mode (ie: vertical) I had 900 unread items in my feedreader. 200 disappeared instanteously when a few border-line subscriptions finally got tossed. Of course, sixty-percent of the rest of those un-read items were April Fool’s related bogus posts – which I normally enjoy every year. This year, however, trying to catch up with 2 days of reading while wading through the Fool-ish stuff just about killed me. Thankfully, near the end of the day, this video appeared in my reader courtesy of Marc Andreessen.
I’m not familiar with Tom Gleeson, but the “talking back to the music video” format is brilliant…

The other day I posted a video of a four-legged robot named BigDog. That video has garnered over 700,000 views in a little over 36 hours – presumably not all from my blog. Why the massive interest? Cuz the thing is damn creepy! Not only does it have better balance than a real dog (or human, for that matter) but it is being developed for military use (creator Boston Dynamics is funded by DARPA) which brings all kinds of scary thoughts to mind. An armed BigDog in just about any scenario is something to be feared.
Anyway, while looking around for other BigDog-related stuff, I came across a site devoted entirely to BigDog videos! It’s really just a small collection of YouTube videos of BigDog and its cousins… yes, BigDog is not alone. There’s LittleDog, RHex, and the startling RiSE.
If you’re into robots, or just enjoy getting creeped out by military research, it’s worth the visit.

Why? Because everyone will stay home on election day. Conservatives will stay home because McCain is too moderate. Progressives will stay home because Clinton is too establishment. Moderates will stay home because neither candidates is scary enough to force a decision. Hawks will stay home because neither is strong enough on the war in Iraq. Doves will stay home because both supported the war in Iraq.
So who’s left? Not many. This scenario will almost certainly accelerate the democratic deficit in America that has seen voter turnout numbers tumble in recent elections.

Marc Aminder remarks that the latest Clinton ad is reminiscent of two historical political ads: LBJ’s “Daisy” and Mondale’s “Red Phone”. I would add one more to the list. The political ad that immediately sprang to my mind when I saw Clinton’s ad was Reagan’s “Bear in the Woods” ad.
I am so tired of the fear-mongering rhetoric that’s been hurled at us from the Republicans for the last 8 years… it’s disappointing to see it from a democrat now, too.
By the way, I highly recommend Living Room Candidate for those who love watching the evolution of political advertising unfold
update: Fixed the links to the “Bear” and “Daisy” ads…

Welcome to ColinCarmichael.ca, my new home on the web. This blog is a consolidation of two previous blogs, Cailean’s Head and WebStrategyThoughts which have boht been on extended hiatuses (hiati?). All posts from those two blogs now reside here.
This blog is and will be a mix of personal news, social media observations, and random stuff found on the interweb. To keep things sorted, I’ve created three categories, each with their own feed plus the ‘everything feed’.
Side-Effects:
One of the side-effects of consolidating my old blogs here is that I’ve had to go through and edit almost all of them to fix tags and categories and such… unfortunately this means that the trackbacks all got re-sent and since they were from a new domain, they got posted. Argh. If your blog got inadvertently pinged by me, sorry about that.
