Social Networking and Politics 2.0

Monday, April 14th, 2008

In the video below, Democratic Presidential front-runner Barack Obama talks about social networking and its impact on his campaign at a private function in Silicon Valley. In particular, he mentions the ability to create organizations in Idaho and Kansas throught the online social nets before the campaign apparatus was involved. He also muses that these technology-enabled grass-roots movements have reduced the impact of high-profile endorsements and dogmatic special interest groups.

Most interesting, however, was his mention the potential to apply “these same principles” to government.

More details about the event at zenvalley.com.

Post-Illness Silliness

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

I’ve spent the last two days sicker than I think I’ve ever been… seriously, it was brutal.

So today when I finally got back to working mode (ie: vertical) I had 900 unread items in my feedreader. 200 disappeared instanteously when a few border-line subscriptions finally got tossed. Of course, sixty-percent of the rest of those un-read items were April Fool’s related bogus posts – which I normally enjoy every year. This year, however, trying to catch up with 2 days of reading while wading through the Fool-ish stuff just about killed me. Thankfully, near the end of the day, this video appeared in my reader courtesy of Marc Andreessen.

I’m not familiar with Tom Gleeson, but the “talking back to the music video” format is brilliant…

The Metal Me

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

I will very rarely write here about things that are directly related to my work with Ford – for so many reasons. But today I came across something that is just too funny not to pass along…

Update: I’ve killed the embedded video here because there’s no way to disable the auto-play or to mute it…

Meddling with US Presidential Politics (from Canada)

Monday, February 4th, 2008

During The Commute this morning I made reference to the fact that I was running political ads on Facebook that drove traffic to the "Yes, We Can" video (embedded below). After spending about thirty bucks, I’ve now turned them off and thought I’d share some of the data with you.

fb-ads

 fb-ad-stats

I ran a total of 5 different ad variations – with the final two running simultaneously for the bulk of it.  These two ads were identical with one targeted to New York and New Jersey (Clinton’s neighbourhood) and the other targeted to the rest of the Super Tuesday states. The 5 ads garnered just over 100,000 impressions and 59 clicks. Conversion rate works out to 0.06 with a 0.51 CPC and 0.28 CPM.  Notably (perhaps) the CTR was lower in the Clinton states.

I invite you to draw your own conclusions in the comments.

As promised, here’s the video that has the potential to change the world:

Web 2.0 Video

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Last week I made an attempt to define the concept of Web2.0 and somehow forgot to include a link to the most powerful visual explanation of the new web and what it means to us and how we view the world. So here it is now:

What is Web 2.0?

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Gee, have we seen that question before? As tired as many of us are of talking about it, one cannot talk about web strategy in 2007 without making some attempt at defining the concept of Web 2.0. Andi Gutmans (via Frank Gruber) make a good attempt in a video recently, but still relies too heavily on industry acronyms and buzzwords like RIA, SOA, AJAX, etc. A product manager or marketing exec should not need to understand these terms in order to be comfortable talking about Web2.0. But Andi’s video is still worth watching because the stuff in between the buzzwords is great.

When I need to explain three of the key Web2.0 concepts to folks, I often turn to the ‘In Plain English’ videos produced by Common Craft. Their videos on RSS, wikis, and social networking are extremely accessible for people with very little web technical knowledge. The folks at Common Craft have a real talent for explaining these concepts quickly and in, well, plain English. Unfortunately, they don’t help us define Web2.0 itself.

Of course, there are thousands of definitions of Web 2.0 littered throughout the web – including Wikipedia’s lengthy article. Many of them however are not accessible to people who don’t already ‘get’ the web. So let me take a swing at it.

Web2.0 is an evolution of web technology that allows the web to become a conversation. If Web1.0 represented the information revolution, Web2.0 represents collaboration revolution. It allows, and encourages, the audience to become the content.

So… that’s my definition. Over-simplified? Perhaps, but it passes my test of accessibility to folks who may be having trouble just catching up to Web1.0.

What is your definition of Web2.0?
